Dear Lilly,
I was at MoMA and saw this sculpture by Joel Shapiro. It was one of the last sculptures he made before he died. I worked for him for 6 or 7 years, from 1976 on. I went over to his studio a day or so a week and took care of all his office work.
So here is a story: I remember when he discovered this way of working - by putting together pieces of wood, like children's blocks, that he'd painted in lovely colors with gouache or casein. He was very excited and he called me before I came in and said, "I've had a breakthrough, you'll see." When I got there, there must have been 20-30 pieces, mounted on the wall, all of them quite small - around 10-12 cm. What struck me was the sense of permission he had. He let them all tumble out. So many! And they were great.
Then he kept working in that vein for the rest of his life.
